These adaptors are compatible with the bulkier type of UK 13A plug now used on all EV chargers including the Tesla mod 1 and mod 2 UMCs. If you have a Tesla mod 2 UMC, a specific version of the ModulEV® system offering faster charging rates is available here. Please see our guidance on determining which Tesla UMC version you have.

Using an EV 'granny charger' in the UK is relatively simple, as domestic locations only have standard 13A sockets. In contrast, charging abroad can be a confusing minefield! Firstly you need to navigate a range of different sockets which look deceptively similar, yet may be in incompatible with some plugs, even when they physically fit together.

Secondly you need to overcome the frequent issue of reverse polarity (the Tesla Mod 2 charger is now unaffected). In simple terms, in the UK a 13A plug can only be inserted one way. If you face a socket, the live is always wired to the right receptacle (hole), with the neutral to the left. Many UK EV chargers (we are attempting to compile a list of those which are, but it is challenging as the manufacturers often do not state) expect the power to be configured in that way, and will not operate if the live and neutral are connected the other way around (the polarity is reversed). A comprehensive guide to sockets used across Europe and Scandinavia and the issue of reverse polarity is available here.

Following extensive research and feedback from frustrated EV users, we developed the ModulEV® EV charging system. ModulEV® is a modular system, which enables the charging of an EV using domestic sockets across Europe and Scandinavia. It provides a unique, simple, cost effective, compact and expandable solution:

  • Connect the required adaptor to the ModulEV® 13A socket unit, by simply pushing the connectors together and twisting to lock.
  • The ModulEV® universal CEE7/7 plug adaptor (purchased separately), can be connected to both Schuko and French sockets, providing a single solution for the majority of Europe and Scandinavia.
  • Plug the adaptor into for example, any Schuko/French socket, and use a socket tester to confirm whether the supply is wired correctly for your EV charger.
  • If the polarity is reversed, the ModulEV® 13A socket unit incorporates a clever switch, which at a press swaps the polarity over, so that it will always provide you with the correct configuration. Having one unit removes the need for separate polarity reversal adaptors, reducing both the cost and storage space required.
  • Plug your EV charger into the ModulEV® 13A socket unit, and charge as you would in the UK. Unlike any other available UK weatherproof socket, this version closes shut with the more bulky type of 13A plug now used on all EV chargers including Tesla mod 1 and mod 2 UMCs. If you have a Tesla mod 2 UMC, a specific Tesla mod 2 compatible travel system is available (if you are unsure which Tesla charger you have click here).
  • Modular connector enables expansion of the system as your travels progress.

Modular Design

The ModulEV® 13A socket unit is fitted with a weatherproof IP65 modular connector. Following an extensive search for a suitable connector and months of testing, we chose this one as it is widely being adopted as the universal standard for stage/event lighting. Its compact size (it can easily pass through a letter box or other restricted space), reliability and unique twist/lock design, make it ideal for this application. The connector enables the ModulEV® system to be expanded with a range of other modular components. As well as extension cables to increase the length, adaptors are available to enable it to be used with sockets across Europe and Scandinavia.

Typical Applications

1. The picture below illustrates a typical application; an EV charger with a UK 13A plug is connected to a Schuko socket using the ModulEV socket fitted with the Schuko/French universal adaptor.

2.When travelling to Switzerland the Schuko/French adaptor is removed by simply pressing the button on the ModulEV connector and turning it 90 degrees. The Swiss 16A adaptor is then connected; a change which takes a matter of seconds.

3. In Denmark the socket is further away from the EV, so a 10m modular extension cable is used in between the Danish adaptor and the ModulEV socket.

Adaptor Options

The adaptors on this page can be used with both the ModulEV® travel power system (which is compatible with the 13A plug on both Tesla mod 1 and mod 2 chargers) and the specific ModulEV® Tesla mod 2 compatible travel system. They will not function on their own, or in conjunction with any other product.

Modular Extension Cables

Modular extension cables can be used to extend the ModulEV® adaptor. More than one lead can be connected together up to 25m, to enable expansion over time.

The leads are also available with an in-line RCD fitted for added protection - only one RCD is required per set-up.

Alternatively, if you already have an EV UK extension lead, it can be used in conjunction with the ModulEV® adaptor to extend the length.

In-line RCD Module

An RCD is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you come into contact with a live wire or current. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide. The RCD module is connected straight after the required adaptor, in order to protect the cable run as well as the EV charger.

Modular extension cables are also available with an in-line RCD, which can be used instead of the RCD module.

Schuko

French

Universal Schuko/French Adaptor

The universal CEE 7/7 adaptor fits both Schuko and French types sockets and is the main adaptor required for the majority of Europe and Scandinavia.

Traditional Italian Socket

New Bipasso Socket

Italian Adaptors 10A and 16A

Historically Italy has had its own specific socket, available in 10A and 16A versions. However, many buildings now have the Bipasso/Schuko socket, which can be used with both Italian and Schuko plugs.

The universal Schuko/French adaptor will therefore work anywhere in Italy where the Bipasso/Schuko socket is available. However the challenge may be in older buildings, where only traditional Italian sockets are provided.

Whilst many sockets in Italy will accept both 10A and 16A plugs, some will only accept one type, so for complete peace of mind both adaptors would be required. Please note that use of the 10A adaptor will limit charging to 10A and this must be dialled down on your EV.

Swiss Adaptor

Switzerland and Liechtenstein use their own specific socket, available in 10A and 16A versions. 10A plugs can be inserted into 16A sockets, but the reverse is not possible.

For complete peace of mind both adaptors would be required. Alternatively just the 10A version could be used as it will fit both sockets, although please note that with the 10A, adaptor charging will be limited to 10A and this must be dialled down on your EV.

Danish Adaptor

Denmark and Greenland use their own 16A socket. Whilst the socket looks similar to a Schuko/French socket, they must not be used together. Although they will fit, the earth will not be connected, which is extremely hazardous for EV charging. The Danish adaptor must be used for these sockets.

From 2008 French sockets were allowed to be fitted in Denmark, with Schuko sockets supported from 2011. The universal Schuko/French adaptor will therefore work in Denmark where either of these sockets are fitted. Data on their prevalence is not available, and so it is likely that in many places a Danish adaptor will still be required.

CEE 230v 16A Adaptor

The 230v 16A adaptor enables the ModuEV® 13A socket to be connected to the blue 16A CEE sockets which are found at campsites and marinas across Europe. In the UK these are always wired in a standard way, but in Europe the polarity may be reversed, making the polarity switch on the unit essential.

N.B. The Tesla mod 2 UMC is supplied with a 16A plug adaptor, which can be connected to 230v 16A sockets directly and extended using a standard 16A extension lead. The ModulEV may however provide a more flexible solution.

CEE 230v 32A Adaptor

Commonly used in industrial locations and power installations at temporary sites.

As the ModulEV® system is rated at 16A max, an adaptor with a 16A MCB is required. The enclosure has a built in ModuLEV connector, allowing it to be plugged in directly to the ModulEV socket, or via an extension cable.

The standalone 32A to 13A socket adaptor may provide a more cost effective solution where the flexibility of the ModulEV system is not required and 13A max charging is sufficient.

N.B. The Tesla mod 1 UMC is supplied with a 32A plug adaptor, which can be connected to 230v 32A sockets directly to provide higher power charging. Please contact us for compatible 32A extension leads.

CEE 415v 16A Adaptor

The 415v 16A adaptor enables the EV travel adaptor to be connected to these sockets, which are commonly used in industrial locations and power installations at temporary sites.
