These adaptors are only compatible with the Tesla gen 2 UMC and any other device with a 230v 16A IEC60309/CEE/Commando plug. For connecting all other EVs using a 13A plug and Tesla Gen 1 UMCs, see our standalone adaptors or the standard ModulEV® system.

The Mobile Connector (previously known as the Universal Mobile Connector/UMC) is the portable charger supplied with every Tesla, often known as the 'granny charger'. Prior to around January 2019, Tesla's were supplied with the generation 1 Mobile Connector, before changing to the generation 2. The two different versions provide distinctly different power input options:

  • Gen 1 provides a 32A input, whilst gen 2 provides 16A.
  • Unlike gen 1, generation 2 units are not affected by reverse polarity. This means that polarity reversal adaptors are not required.

Generation 1

  • Single or 3 phase charging (with red CEE plug additional adaptor).
  • 2.3kW - 11kW (3 phase only).
  • 13A UK plug.
  • 32A CEE blue commando plug (57mm diameter).
  • Can be identified by a short length of cable between the main unit and the adaptor socket.

Generation 2

  • Single phase charging.
  • 2.3kW - 3.7kW.
  • 7kW with 32A additional adaptor (not supplied).
  • 13A UK plug.
  • 16A CEE blue commando plug (43mm diameter).
  • The adaptor socket is an integral part of the main unit.


Using the Gen 2 Mobile Connector in Europe and Scandinavia

Using the Mobile Connector in the UK is relatively simple, as there are generally only domestic 13A or commercial 16A sockets. In contrast, charging abroad can be a confusing minefield, with a need to navigate a range of different sockets which look deceptively similar, yet may be in incompatible with some plugs, even when they physically fit together.

Following extensive research and customer feedback, we developed the Tesla Gen 2 compatible version of our ModulEV® EV charging system. ModulEV® is a modular system, which enables the charging of an EV using domestic and commercial sockets in the UK and domestic sockets across Europe and Scandinavia. It provides a unique, simple, cost effective, compact and expandable solution:

  • Connect the required adaptor to the ModulEV® 16A socket unit, by simply pushing the connectors together and twisting to lock. The socket unit is the core part of the system.
  • The ModulEV® universal CEE7/7 plug adaptor (purchased separately), can be connected to both Schuko and French sockets, providing a single solution for the majority of Europe and Scandinavia.
  • Plug the adaptor into for example, any Schuko/French socket
  • If a longer cable is required, use any combination of ModulEV® modular extension cables, up to a maximum of 25m.
    • Plug the Tesla 16A Mobile Connector lead into the ModulEV® 16A socket unit (or via an extension cable), and charge up to 16A.
    • Modular connector enables expansion of the system as your travels progress.
    • All modules and leads are compatible across the standard ModulEV® and Tesla Gen 2 ModulEV® ranges. This means that you can use the standard solution if you currently have a Gen 1 Tesla charger, but in the future if you are lucky enough to own a new post January 2019 Gen 2 unit, all you need to do is change the 13A socket adaptor to a 16A socket.

      Modular Design

      The ModulEV® 16A socket unit is fitted with a weatherproof IP65 modular connector. Following an extensive search for a suitable connector and months of testing, we chose this one as it is widely being adopted as the universal standard for stage/event lighting. Its compact size (it can easily pass through a letter box or other restricted space), reliability and unique twist/lock design, make it ideal for this application. The connector enables the ModulEV® system to be expanded with a range of other modular components. As well as extension cables to increase the length, adaptors are available to enable it to be used with sockets across Europe and Scandinavia.

      Typical Applications

      1. The picture below illustrates a typical application with a Tesla Gen 2 Mobile Connector fitted with the Tesla 230v 16A plug cable. It is connected to a Schuko socket using the Schuko/French universal adaptor and the ModulEV Tesla compatible socket.

      2.When travelling to Switzerland the Schuko/French adaptor is removed by simply pressing the button on the ModulEV connector and turning it 90 degrees. The Swiss 16A adaptor is then connected; a change which takes a matter of seconds.

      3. In Denmark the socket is further away from the EV, so a 10m modular extension cable is used in between the Danish adaptor and the ModulEV Tesla compatible socket.

      Adaptor Options



      Universal Schuko/French Adaptor

      The universal CEE 7/7 adaptor fits both Schuko and French types sockets and is the main adaptor required for the majority of Europe and Scandinavia.

      Traditional Italian Socket

      New Bipasso Socket

      Italian Adaptors 10A and 16A

      Historically Italy has had its own specific socket, available in 10A and 16A versions. However, many buildings now have the Bipasso/Schuko socket, which can be used with both Italian and Schuko plugs.

      The universal Schuko/French adaptor will therefore work anywhere in Italy where the Bipasso/Schuko socket is available. However the challenge may be in older buildings, where only traditional Italian sockets are provided. 

      Whilst many sockets in Italy will accept both 10A and 16A plugs, some will only accept one type, so for complete peace of mind both adaptors would be required. Please note that use of the 10A adaptor will limit charging to 10A and this must be dialled down on your EV.

      Swiss Adaptor

      Switzerland and Liechtenstein use their own specific socket, available in 10A and 16A versions. 10A plugs can be inserted into 16A sockets, but the reverse is not possible. 

      For complete peace of mind both adaptors would be required. Alternatively just the 10A version could be used as it will fit both sockets, although please note that with the 10A, adaptor charging will be limited to 10A and this must be dialled down on your EV.

      Danish Adaptor

      Denmark and Greenland use their own 16A socket. Whilst the socket looks similar to a Schuko/French socket, they must not be used together. Although they will fit, the earth will not be connected, which is extremely hazardous for EV charging. The Danish adaptor must be used for these sockets.

      From 2008 French sockets were allowed to be fitted in Denmark, with Schuko sockets supported from 2011. The universal Schuko/French adaptor will therefore work in Denmark where either of these sockets are fitted. Data on their prevalence is not available, and so it is likely that in many places a Danish adaptor will still be required.

      Modular Extension Cables

      Modular extension cables can be used to extend the ModulEV® adaptor. More than one lead can be connected together up to 25m, to enable expansion over time.

      In-line RCD Module

      An RCD is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you come into contact with a live wire or current. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide. The RCD module is connected straight after the required adaptor, in order to protect the cable run as well as the EV charger.

      UK 13A Sockets

      The ModulEV UK 13A plug adaptor enables the system to be used as an extension lead within the UK. The charging current must be set below 13A, as when using the 16A Tesla Mobile Connector, this will not occur automatically.

      Alternatively, an EV compatible extension lead could be used instead within the UK, to connect with the Tesla UK 13A Mobile Connector lead.

      230v 16A CEE Adaptor

      Found at campsites and marinas across the UK. 

      The 16A Mobile Connector lead plugs in directly, with no adaptor required.

      The ModulEV® system can be used to extend the lead, using the 230v 16A adaptor

      230v 32A CEE Adaptor

      Commonly used in industrial locations and power installations at temporary sites.

      There are three options:

      415v 16A CEE Adaptor

      • Connect the 16A Mobile Connector lead using a 16A 415v to 16A 230v adaptor.
      • The ModulEV® system can be used to extend the lead, using the 230v 16A adaptor
